Alfred Roy Stanford was called Roy. He was born 14 March 1890 in Ogden, Weber, UT and died 30 Dec 1918 in Pendleton, Umatilla, OR. He married Ethel Grace Henderson on 10 Apr 1918. Ethel was born 24 March 1895 in Clearwater, Antelope, NE and died in May 1981 in Washington. Ethel remarried after Roy's death.

Alfred Roy Stanford, the oldest child of Thomas Barnett and Mary Jane (Hiatt) Stanford was born in Ogden, Weber, Utah on 14 Mar 1890.  He moved with his family to Washington and then to Canada in 1901.

While living in Canada, in the wintertime everyone would get together for dances and parties.  When it came time to call for the dances, Roy was the man chosen.  Roy also played the harmonica.

When he was old enough Roy took a homestead in the Pine Coulee area.

Ethel Henderson Honored
Given China Shower Last Saturday Evening at Edwards Home.

A pleasing and delightful event of last week was a china shower given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Edwards in honor of Miss Ethel Henderson who is to become an early April bride.

Pin carnations with ferns were used in a profuseive manner as decorations for the occasion.  Refreshments were served.  Miss May Bridgewater assisted the hostess.

The brides-to-be received many useful and beautiful pieces of chinaware. (Vol XXXI No 10; Page 1 Col 7)

Former Milton Man is Dead

Alfred Roy Stanford succumbs to Pneumonia December 30.

Alfred Roy Stanford, formerly of this city and Freewater, and son of Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Stanford, residents of Milton, succumbed to an attack of Pneumonia following influenza Monday at Pendleton.  The deceased was born at Ogden, Utah, February 14, 1890 and came to Milton about a year ago.  For the past few months he was employed at a garage at Pendleton.

He is survived by a wife, father, mother, and eight brothers and sisters, Mrs. Roy Downs of Joseph;  Mrs. W.E. Smith of North Powder; Delbert Stanford of Enterprise, and Eva, May, Ada, Fernie, and Blanche of Milton.

The body was shipped here Tuesday for burial.  Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church Elder J. Clive Davis of  Walla Walla officiating.

Interment was in the local I.O.O. F. cemetery under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Maxwell. (Vol XXXI  No 50; Page 1 Col 4)

ROY  STANFORD

Delbert Stanford and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Down went to Milton Monday to attend the funeral of Roy Stanford who died of pneumonia on Dec. 29^th at Pendleton.  He leaves a wife having been married barely a year. (Ref. Wallowa County Reporter, Thursday January 2, 1919, found on-line)

LEFT FOR LaGRANDE

Mrs. Ethel Stanford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.C. Henderson, left Sunday afternoon for LaGrande for a stay at the home of her brother, L. C. Henderson.  Mrs. Stanford has been located in Walla Walla the past few months and in Milton of late. (REF: Vol. XXXII  No. 26, Page 1 Col. 3)

1919 Sep 26 –

Peter Cartwright Henderson, father of Ethel Henderson Stanford died.  He was born in Illinois Jan 3, 1843 and married to Amanda Billeter of  Iowa in 1872.  In 1902 they came to Wallowa county and in 1910 moved to Milton.  He was survived by eight children (Vol XXXII  No 36; Page 1 Col 5)

Birthday Party

To honor the birthday of Mrs. Ethel Stanford, employee of the local telephone exchange, a number of friends gathered at the home of Mrs. R. D. Edwards Wednesday, with Mrs. Stanford as guest of honor.  Music, conversation and dainty refreshments made the occasion one of pleasure.  Mrs. Stanford was presented with a beautiful wrist watch chain. Young People Wed Saturday
C. H. Young and Ethel Stanford are Married in Walla Walla

Miss [sic] Ethel Stanford became the bride of C.H. Young in Walla Walla Saturday afternoon.

Both of the young people are well known there.  The bride is the daughter of Mrs. A. Henderson and has been employed in the local telephone exchange.  Mr. Young is the son of Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Young.

The couple will make their home here. (Vol XXXV  No 26; Page 1 Col 4)

COMMENTS:
I (Betty Hanson) began to read the old newspapers when Stan Stanford and I had a question as to where we could find some proof that Roy (or Grandpa) owned the first Ford dealership in town.   Both of our parents had told us such.  We thought by reading the newspaper we would be able to find an ad that would offer some proof.  However, I have found none thus far by reading from Jan 1916 to July 1922 in the Milton, Eagle.  I now know they did not have the first dealership in Milton.  However, there is some indication that this might not be true for Freewater.  I seem to remember that my Mom told me when the church was having rummage sales  (1960’s) that Roy owned a livery stable that was located right over there (she pointed).  This was on Main Street in Freewater – on the south east corner of 7^th Avenue.  At the time I didn’t pay much attention.  Dumb Me!!!
