2. Joseph TAYLOR Sr. was
born about 1728. He died about 1808 in , Edgecombe, North Carolina. He was
buried in , Edgecombe, North Carolina. ! Info for Joseph, Sr. from land grant
dtd 23 Jun 1760, Tyrrell
Co,N.C. from
Earl of Granville. (He applied for the land in 1756.) Issued 27
Aug1760. (File

ofConeto
Swamp, opposite the Benjamin Lewis Settlement and along the saidSwamp.
Indenture made 29 Sep 1807, Edgecombe Co, N.C. between
JosephTaylor, Sr. and
John Taylor, (his son), which says in the description of the property
"..."thence along Joseph Taylor Sr.'s line to the mouth of a
Branch,which
divides the plantation whereon Joseph Taylor Senior and Joseph
TaylorJunior
now lives, on ..." Several other land records about Joseph
Taylor,Sr. in
Tyrrell, Martin and Edgecombe Counties, N.C.
LDS Archive FGS by Jesse L. Warner.
The last land record for Joseph Taylor, Sr. was dated 27 Feb.
1808,Edgecombe
Co, N.C. when he sold a tract of his land to William Best for
twopounds. Then
he disappears from the record. It is assumed that he died soon
afterthis.
Note: "an explanation should be made about the property of
thisTaylor family
on Conetoe Creek in No. Carolina. The "Conetoe Creek" Taylors
hadtheir land
grants, Wills, deeds, Marriage Bonds, and other legal
transactionsrecorded in
three counties:
(1) In Tyrrell County, N.C. until 1774.
(2) In Martin County, N.C. until 1793.
(3) In Edgecombe County, N.C. after 1793.
Yet they never moved off the lands they had held since 1756 on
ConetoeCreek."

"Conetoe Creek Taylors" by Jesse Warner.
Note: On the F.G.S. prepared by Jesse Warner, two other
possibledaughters
were listed for Joseph Taylor, Sr. and Nancy:
(1) Miss Taylor who married Gray Little (from a Bill of Sale
fromJoseph
Taylor for slaves, 27 Feb 1807)
(2) Miss Taylor who married Ely Porter of Tarboro, N.C. (from
aBill of Sale
from Joseph Taylor, Jr. for slaves, formerly purchased from
WilliamBest on 15
Sep 1807, witnessed by Wm Best and John Taylor.)
I don't feel there is sufficient evidence at this time (1993)
toindicate
they were in fact daughters of Joseph Taylor, Sr. Mrs. Doris
Wilson,Martin
Co. Historian agreed with me. She also did some research about
familyof Gray
Little, and he was married to Sylvia Penina Ann Thigpen
(1770-1831),she
said. Also some research about Eli Porter by Pete Austin of
Matthews,N.C. said
he was married to Martha Sabra Pippen. Martha died after Eli.
Miss Taylor who supposedly married William Best, may not be
adaughter
either. According to Mrs. Doris Wilson, their records show
thatWilliam Best's
first wife was a Miss Langley. Note: There may have been
otherchildren of
Joseph Taylor, Sr. and Nancy, who are unknown to me at this
time.(1993)
Note: In regards to the birthdate of Joseph Taylor, Sr.: An
oldPedigree
Chart found by Donald Miller of Ogden, said that he was born in
1722,which
could be very possible. (Found in the book "Ancestors and
Descendantsof Jehu
Cox", by Wayne D. Stout,--a Pedigree Chart for Elizabeth Ann StoutCox,
daughter of Hosea Stout and Louisa Taylor--Louisa was a daughter
ofWilliam
Taylor and Elizabeth Patrick--William Taylor was the grandson
ofJoseph Taylor,
Sr. and Nancy. It should be noted that Elizabeth Ann Stout lived
withher
Grandmother Elizabeth Patrick Taylor when a young girl.
PerhapsElizabeth
P. Taylor gave her this information?)
He was married to Nancy about 1750 in
, , of Virginia. Nancy was born about 1731. She died
in , of Edgecombe, North Carolina. ! Information concerning possible surname
of Nancy found by
DonaldMiller, of
Ogden, at SLC FHL, in the book of "Ancestors and Descendants of
JehuCox",
by Wayne D. Stout, of a Pedigree Chart for Elizabeth Ann Stout Cox,
daughter of Hosea Stout and Louisa Taylor, daughter of William Taylor
and Elizabeth Patrick, shows that the wife of Joseph Taylor (Sr.) was
Nancy CHERRY. Note: Louisa Taylor Stout died quite young and her
husband Hosea went on an LDS Mission to China--so the Stout children
lived with their Grandmother Elizabeth Patrick Taylor. Could she have
given her Stout grandchildren this information?
Another source, that of Asher Leon Young of Nashville, Tenn.
saysthat his
branch of the family show Nancy's surname to be WALKER. (He is a
desc.of
Charlotte Taylor White, daughter of Joseph Taylor, Jr.-Sarah Best.)
A.Leon is
now deceased (1993).
Another possibility might be that her surname could be
WARREN.Joseph
Taylor, Jr. and Sarah Best named their first son William WARRENTaylor,
born 1787.
These theories cannot be proven at this time, but appear to be
thebest
clues known.
The mother of Joseph Taylor, Jr. was given as "Nancy" by
PleasantGreen
Taylor in 1872 when he did temple work for his family at the Endowment
House in Salt Lake City. (He had gone on an L.D.S. Mission
from1870-72
to Warren County, Ky,) and he visited old relatives there. We know he
visited his Uncle Allen Taylor, b. 1789, who was still living at that
time, and Allen must have known who his Grandmother Taylor was.)
Unfortunately, Nancy's name does not appear with her husband on
anyof the
land records in No. Carolina to my knowledge. Very little is
knownabout her. Joseph TAYLOR Sr. and Nancy had the following children:
+5 i.
Joseph TAYLOR Jr..
+6 ii.
David TAYLOR.
+7 iii.
John TAYLOR.
+8 iv.
Miss TAYLOR.
