Note: Thomas Dobson moved with his parents from Butler Co, OH,
toTazewell Co,
IL, in 1831. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-daySaints on 28
Dec 1836 and was ordained an elder in Oct 1841. After his marriage
in1843,
Thomas resided at Hancock Co, IL, until 1846, when he moved
toPottawattamie
Co, IO. In 1849 he moved to Union Grove, Harrison, IO, and in 1852
hemoved to
Mason's Grove, Crawford, IO.
The first election of Mason's Grove officers was held at his
housein April
1854. He was chosen justice of the peace and assessor of Crawford
Co.In 1855
he was chosen county clerk and in 1858 he was elected
countysuperintendent.
He was again elected county supervisor in 1860 and county recorder
in1866.
Thomas affiliated with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ
ofLatter Day
Saints in 1861. He was president of the Galland's Grove District
andwas
sent as a delegate to the annual conference at Plano, Kendall, IL, in
1871. He was widely known in western Iowa as proprietor of
DobsonMills
and for writing a history of Crawford County. He was appointed by the
General Conference of 1878 to serve a mission."
!Thomas Dobson was apparently excommunicated from the L.D.S.
Churchfor joining
the Reorganized L.D.S. Church. He had his temple ordinances
